Christmas Groaners

Who Started Christmas?

This morning, I heard a story on the radio of a woman who was out Christmas shopping with her two children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with her two kids.

She was feeling what so many of us feel during the holiday season time of the year -- overwhelming pressure to go to every party, every housewarming, taste all the holiday food and treats, getting that perfect gift for every single person on our shopping list, making sure we don't forget anyone on our card list, and the pressure of making sure we respond to everyone who sent us a card.

Finally the elevator doors opened, and there was already a crowd in the car. She pushed her way into the car and dragged her two kids in with her and all the bags of stuff. When the doors closed, she couldn't take it anymore and stated, "Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be found, strung up and shot."

From the back of the car, everyone heard a quiet calm voice respond, "Don't worry; we already crucified him." For the rest of the trip down in the elevator, it was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop.

Don't forget this year to keep the One who started this whole Christmas thing in your every thought, deed, purchase, and word. If we all did that, just think how different this whole world would be.

Thanks, Al & Carol Eberhart, Placerville CA

2) Pray for our country. . . Remember Pearl Harbor -- December 7th. Pray for those families who lost loved ones that day. Praise God for the freedom we have in the United States.

Missionaries

4) Scott and Evani Hunnicutt in South America ask for prayer for their town of 15,000 people. There are only 2 policemen for the whole town and all time slots. Recently there have been a rash of shootings. Three have died. The police presence is too thin to do anything about it. The townspeople rebelled and rioted, tearing up the jail, the mayor's office and the police station. The state leaders are not responding to the needs of the town. Pray that God can settle things down and use His people to strengthen His witness. Pray for open and responding hearts to God's Word.

5) Pray for Katherin who has returned to Mongolia. She is doing the bookkeeping for 2 mission groups there. She discovered some errors and is working with the leaders to resolve the problems. Pray for her to be gracious with the leaders in this process. Pray for wisdom regarding her next assignment and length of stay in Mongolia.

Update: Johnee, Charlotte's mother is doing much better after having the pacemaker installed. Charlotte will stay awhile.

6) Pray for Dr Tim and Joan Herrick in Mali serving with The Navigators. Continue to pray that the Lord would open doors for them to have an impact on the health of people in Mali and for friendships that might advance the Kingdom of Heaven.

7) Continue to pray for Steve and Erica Lawry who lead Parakaleo Christian Ministries as they train biblical counselors at Stanford University. Their time in Hungary was wonderful and exhausting. The Biblical Counseling material was deeply accepted there and the folks were open hearted and open minded. This past semester, the courses at Stanford have gathered many more students. Steve and Erica are preparing the material for publication. Pray about that too.

8) Pray for Bruce and Deb Robinson in Haiti. Haitian currency has lost half its value since September. Pray for rain so people can grow their own food (and thereby need less money). Pray that the water line projects can put a good number of men to work because each man working means a family eating with dignity. Pray for the church building at Myet that needs to be roofed in March. Pray for repairs on a handpump in a village where the people have to walk 6 miles roundtrip for what water they can carry. Pray that this work brings people to God.

Washington DC

9) Pray for the salvation of Ted Kennedy, Hilary Clinton, and Tom Daschle.

10) Pray for those congressional leaders who are open about their Christian beliefs. There is lots of pressure in Congress. (Congress is in recess this week)

Oregon

11) Pray for PrayerWorks staffers, Jay and Dave. Jay was sick last week and now Dave is sick.

Christmas Groaners

There was a Russian weatherman who lived in Siberia. Now everyone knows that it never rains in Siberia -- it only snows. But this meteorologist predicted rain, not just once but for several days.

The local Meteorologist Society was shocked and they turned him in to the National Weather Bureau.

The NWB sent a representative to the town to settle the debate. Both the Meteorologic Society and the NWB representative went to the weatherman's home to see why he would forecast rain in Siberia.

His wife answered the door. They asked to see the weatherman but she told them he was busy predicting the next day's storm.

At that very moment, it began to rain. His wife said, "See, Rudolph-the-Red knows rain, dear!"

Christmas Poem

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town
Not a sign of Baby Jesus was anywhere to be found.

The people were all busy with Christmas time chores
Like decorating and baking, and shopping in stores.

No one sang “Away in a manger, not crib for a bed”.
Instead, they sang of Santa dressed-up in bright red.

Mama watched Martha Stewart, Papa drank beer from a tap,
As hour upon hour the presents they’d wrap.

When what from the T.V. did they suddenly hear?
‘Cept an ad...which told of a big sale at Sears.

So away to the mall they all flew like a flash...
Buying things on credit...and others with cash!

And, as they made their way home from their trip to the mall,
Did they think about Jesus? Oh, no...not at all.

Their lives were to busy with their Christmas time things
No time to remember Christ Jesus, the King.

There were presents to wrap and cookies to bake.
How could they stop and remember who died for their sake?

To pray to the Savior...they had no time to stop.
Because they needed more time to “Shop til they dropped!”

On Wal-mart! On Kmart! On Target! On Penney’s!
On Hallmark! On Zales! A quick lunch at Denney’s.

From the big stores downtown to the stores at the mall
They would dash away, dash away, and visit them all!

And up on the roof there arose such a clatter
As grandpa hung icicle lights up on his brand new step ladder.

He hung lights that would flash. He hung lights that would twirl.
Yet, he never once prayed to Jesus...Light of the World.

Christ’s eyes...how they twinkle! Christ’s Spirit. . .how merry!
Christ’s love...how enormous! All our burdens...He’ll carry!

So instead of being busy, overworked and uptight
Let’s put Christ back in Christmas, and enjoy some good nights!

Thanks again to Al & Carol Eberhart, Placerville CA

Another Christmas Groaner

A man, living in Arizona, called his daughter in New York, one morning. When she answered the phone, he blurted out, “Your mom and I are getting a divorce.”

After determining the seriousness of the situation, the daughter screamed into the phone, “Don’t do a thing until I get there! I’m calling my brother and we are both coming. Don’t file those papers!” And she hung up.

A few minutes later, the son called. “Is it true? You and Mom are getting a divorce?” The father indicated it was. The son yelled, “Don’t do anything. Sis and I will be there in the morning!”

The man hung up the phone and turned to his wife. “Well, dear. the children will be here for Christmas and they’re paying their own way!”

Yeshua (Jesus)
The Messiah of Israel

John 8:56-58 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad." Then the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you before Abraham was born, I AM."

The New Year

Janus, the ancient god for whom January was named, had two heads. One looked backward and one looked forward.

As the staff of PrayerWorks looks back to see a year filled with growth and goodness. As we look forward we see more growth, more potential areas of service to the Lord, and more blessings.

None of this would be --- if it were not for you'all, God's faithful prayer warriors. Only through your prayer does this ministry exist.

We'all just want to say thanks to you'all for a good year past and a great year coming. Have a blessed new year!
