On July 3rd, he will be taking off for a missions related trip to the Amazon for the entire month. He will be traveling with a group of Brazilians associated with Doctors for Christ. The general purpose for the trip is to attend to medical needs of various groups of people (poor, Indians, isolated communities and a mixture of all). Scott’s specific purpose is to see how to develop a community health program through prevention and training programs. They will spend one-week working around a large garbage dump that is a source of income for many people yet life-threatening and then two-weeks up river in an isolated poor community of 120 people. Pray that: **Health issues and primitive living will not distract their purposes. **Scott can be greatly used while learning much. **The team workers are attentive to where God is already at work. **God will supply Evani and Haniel during this time with great care and protection. 5) Pray for Dr. Tim and Joan Herrick in Mali. They took Muslim friends Baba and Mariam to see The Passion of Christ. They were quite impressed with the story of Christ's sufferings. Please pray that the Spirit might speak to their hearts about this suffering being what can secure their salvation. In particular, Baba has been having a hard time letting go of the idea of us meriting God's favor. It seems his whole understanding of the Gospel hinges on this one point. Only the Spirit can break down this sticking point, so please pray. And pray for patience for Tim and Joan, too. These are not the easiest people to get along with. The movie will be showing for two weeks. A couple of other people have said they'd really like to see it, so pray that this would go well, also. And pray in general, for this remarkable infusion of truth into this almost exclusively darkened land, where few even know what the Quran teaches about Jesus, let alone what the Bible says. Washington 6) Pray for the Hodges family. Jean’s mom passed away several weeks ago and Jim’s Dad died this past week. Pray for those of the family who heard the gospel and have not responded yet. 7) Marty reported that all his tests on his heart told the doctors the same thing God told Marty. Pray for her salvation first then her healing. 9) Pray for Earl. He had some surgery this week and needs encouragement and healing. 10) Pray for Jerry. He is a neat Christian man who has been through a lot in his lifetime. Now he has an illness which the doctors cannot put a name to. He is extremely tired and discouraged. Pray for healing. Pray also that someone one come along side him to encourage and uplift him. New York 11) Pray for Bernadine and her sister who has been placed in a nursing home because of her illness. 12) Pray for Mrs. Harris. She is ill and homebound. Bernadine tries to care for Mrs. Harris and run a food pantry and it is all very stressful. So I took her to the gas station. Oh, No! Not Another Groaner A couple lived near the ocean and used to walk the beach a lot. One summer they noticed a girl who was at the beach every day. She wasn't unusual, nor was the travel bag she carried, except for one thing; she would approach people who were sitting on the beach, glance around furtively, then speak to them. Generally the people would respond negatively and she would wander off; sometimes someone would nod and there would be a quick exchange of money and something she carried in her bag. The couple assumed she was selling drugs, and debated calling the cops, but since they didn't know for sure they just continued to watch her. After a few days the wife said, "Honey, have you noticed that she only goes up to people with boom boxes and other electronic devices?" He hadn't, and said so. Then she said, "Tomorrow I want you to get a towel and our big radio and go lie out on the beach. Then we can find out what she's really doing."
Well, the plan went off without a hitch and the wife was excited when she saw the girl talk to her husband and then leave. The man walked up the beach and met his wife at the road. "Well, Is she selling drugs?" she asked. "No, she's not," he said, enjoying this probably more than he should have. "Well, what is it, then? What does she do?" his wife fairly shrieked. The man grinned and said, "She's a battery salesperson." "Batteries?" cried the wife. "Yes," he replied.... Top

The two elderly gentlemen were talking and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly." The other man asked, "What's the name of the restaurant?" The first man knitted his brow in obvious concentration, and finally said to his companion, "Aahh, What is the name of that red flower you give to someone you love?" His friend replied, "A carnation?" "No. No. The other one," the man said. His friend offered another suggestion, "The poppy?" "Nahhh," growled the man. "You know the one that is red and has thorns?" His friend said, "Do you mean a rose?"
"Yes, Yes that's it. Thank you!" the first man said. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?" Top
July 18, 2004 About Bananas Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. Energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a variety of illnesses and conditions. Depression: Many people felt much better after eating a banana. Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. Blood Pressure: Bananas are extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US FDA now allows the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. Brain Power: 200 students were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium- packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body. Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin.. Many find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Overweight and at work? Studies found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. The most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. To avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. Ulcers: The banana is used to fight intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress. It neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan. Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to quit smoking. The B6 and B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Strokes: Eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%. Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill a wart, place a piece of banana skin on the wart, with the yellow side out. Hold the skin in place with surgical tape! So, you see, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. Prayer Requests 1) Pray for revival and an awakening in the church. . . Who says God didn’t know what he was doing when he created!2) Pray for our country. . .As the campaigns at every level begin to escalate, pray for grace and wisdom to be evident in all the candidates’ words and actions. Both are Christians. 7) Pray for Leo and his family. 8) Pray for a different Leo with different problems and his family. Missionaries 9) Pray for Peter and Debbie Dodd. Here are excerpts from their recent letter: "On July 2-3 we had a typhoon come through. It flooded our first, second and fourth floor. Debbie slipped and fell down water covered stairs, spraining her foot. But we lost little. Many of our neighbors lost much more with homes and crops destroyed. Please pray for wisdom in how the church responds to this situation. Thursday, July 8th Peter's mom, Ada, fell and broke her hip. She has had a hip replacement. Please pray for her complete healing. We're excited that we have two short term teams coming in Aug and Sept to lead English camps, one for youth and one for seminary students. Pray with us for the preparations he makes. Please pray for us too as we look forward to our last year here in Tzetong. (Next summer we go on Home Assignment for a year and then will return to Taiwan, but to a different location.) Pray for us and the church to have wisdom in how to make this transition. Thanks so much for standing with us in prayer. We appreciate you greatly." Weather Jargon What is the difference between "partly cloudy" and "partly sunny" in a weather report? Nothing! In fact, "partly sunny" doesn’t exist in technical meteorological terms. The degree of cloudiness is technically defined this way: 0-30% cloud cover is called "clear"; 31-70% is "partly cloudy"; 71-90% is "cloudy"; and 100% is "overcast". Not many people know what the weather service means when it forecasts that there is a "chance" of rain. Precipitation probabilities expressed in vague adjectives also have precise meanings: a 1-20% chance of precipitation means the weather service will not mention rain; 21-50% gives us a "chance" of rain; 51-79% means precipitation is "likely"; and 80-100% means the weatherman will say its going to rain, snow etc.... How does the National Weather Service determine the daily cloud cover in the space age? Do they send up weather balloons? Satellites? Not quite. They send a meteorologist to the roof of a building in a relatively isolated area (airports are usually used in big cities) and have him of her look up at the sky and make a well- informed but very human guess. July 25, 2004 Special Poem For Senior Citizens!! A row of bottles on my shelf One yellow pill I have to pop A little white one that I take The blue ones that I use a lot The purple pill goes to my brain The capsules tell me not to wheeze The red ones, smallest of them all The orange ones, very big and bright Such an array of brilliant pills But what I'd really like to know.......... God must be doing something great! The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Galatians 5:6 We don't have to be perfect to be a blessing. We are asked only to be real, trusting in his perfection to cover our imperfection, knowing that one day we will finally be all that Christ saved us for and wants us to be. You can depend on the Lord; can He depend on you? There are only 21 shopping weeks til Christmas!!! | ||||||||
